As you think of those BIG ideas, look for the small moments that teach those lessons. Look at what characters say or do. Think about how characters react to the events in the story and ask why they act that way. For example, one BIG idea came from Mrs. Johansen in chapter 3. She says that friends will take care of the Hirsch family. "That's what friends do," she says. If friends taking care of one another is a theme in Number the Stars, can we find examples of characters doing just that?
